Two Scarves for Christmas

I made two Irish Hiking scarves for Christmas gifts. They are both knit with two skeins of Patons Shetland Chunky in Oxford Grey and Sage Green. I cast on 30sts and only did two cables because of the heavier yarn. I didn't measure them after blocking, but they are at least 6' long and maybe 6" wide. They are definitely long enough to wear in several different styles. The grey one was started December 1st and finished the 4th, Ravelry details here. The green one was started December 5th and finished the 9th, Ravelry details here.

I made this one for my special somebody for Valentine's Day. I used Dream In Color Classy, and it took just a little over one hank of yarn. I have plenty enough to make fingerless mitts. This is so amazingly soft and snuggly!

This is my first Irish Hiking Scarf and I loved making it. It was perfect for working on the bus, and when I went to see the Yarn Harlot on Tour this was the project I brought with me. My mother has claimed it as her own, so now she's hoping for some cold weather so she can wear it and tell people her "little girl" made it. The yarn is Red Heart (poor college student yarn), I'm not sure what color I lost the ball band years ago. The picture are awful as I don't own a digital camera I've used my webcam that takes the worst pictures ever the colors are very washed out, but I wanted to share anyway.

I know this late for a post for Christmas but I was having difficulties posting last week. I completed two IHS for my son's teachers, they were knit in Knit Picks, Wool of the Andes, in Mist and Snickerdoodle. These were my first cable project and I quite enjoyed doing them even though at first cables have always made me a little nervous. Now not nervous at all. I just started another one in Knit Picks, ShineWorsted in Blush for a friend. I'm sure I will be making more of these too.

IHS #2

This last weekend I started my second ever IHS, using Plymouth Encore bulky.
Since the yarn is so thick, I modified the pattern to use only 2 cables instead of three. So far it's turning out great:

And with bulky yarn it is going quickly!

(This scarf is going to be for myself, too... yippee!)

This is my first post to this KAL. I started my scarf a while back and it's my first cable project. Not nearly as hard as I thought it would be, but it does take some time, doesn't it? I'm using Wendy Aran 25% wool, 75% acrylic. It's kind of nice because it's machine washable and cool tumble dry. It's a lovely eggplant color. Here's my progress so far!

I just got my invitation to join and am so excited. I love the pattern and will be making many more. I finished my first one while waiting for the invite. I made it in Wool-Ease varigated "Wood". It is a gift and I wanted it to be washable. The colors are not true in the picture, but I think the picture displays the cables well. I will be starting anther soon. This my first Irish Hiking Scarf and sure to be one of many. The pattern repeat was simple to learn and made it a project I could easily pick up and put down. This one is done with Cascade 220 Quattro. It's for a knitalong I'm doing on Ravelry with the Nora Roberts group. We're reading some of her books set in Ireland (Gallagher Series, Born In series and Circle trilogy) and making this scarf, the wristwarmers and one of the hats. Come join us if you like!

She loved the Irish Hiking Hat I made for her so now she wants another one in red with a matching scarf.

This is Wool-Ease worsted in Cranberry.

BTW - if you want the pattern for the hat it is at my blog: Learning My Way Through. I'll update it for any changes I make for worsted weight yarn when I finish this one up. I have a vague idea about double knitting the cabled band part of it instead of lining it. We'll see how that goes.

Well, I finished my first IHS years ago... But I have decided to start a second one. I'm also going to knit a hat and fingerless gloves to match. I'll be using Crystal Palace Fjord in the Misty Greens colorway. It matches my winter jacket. :)

I started this two nights ago, using Angels & Elephants DK Blue-faced Leicester in ‘Holly Berry’. It is lovely to knit with and the scarf progresses quickly compared to the ‘Refresher’ baby cardigan I have just finished, due to the needle size - 5mm for the scarf and 2.25mm for the cardigan. Happily sitting and knitting and drinking Earl Grey, and looking at the grey weather outside. Spotty dog and I were up and out early, so I can spend the rest of the day crafting and not going out into the murky weather. Sorry the pictures aren't in chronological order, but I got fed up with this being the third time I have tried to post this...

I've just joined the kal, but I've already begun the scarf. I'm finding that the yarn I used, Knit Picks Andean Silk, is low on yardage. This means that I have a million ends to weave in. Grrr! I've left them all at the edge. Has anyone, through experience, found the best spot to weave them in? I'm wondering where they will hide best. Thx!

Size 10.5US needles, Araucania Nature Wool Chunky. I only did two cable repeats, so it wouldn't be too wide. This is actually done and blocking right now -- the wool grew a *lot* when I blocked it. I really love this pattern

Here is my first hat using the IHS pattern.

Here is a closeup of the cables.

I took the original IHS pattern and modified it to make only it two cables wide. Then I sewed it up to make the band and picked up stitches on one side for the top of the hat. 3 rows in between the decreases to make it pointed. It came out great and is going to be for my Niece. The yarn is 100 % wool and was purchased at a Reny's for only 99cents!

I've started and am happy so far. The cables have been a lot easier to work than I thought they would be. I'm using TLC worsted weight in Charcoal Heather. This is going to be for my husband. Good for bundling up with when he rides his motorcycle. :)

I finished my first IHS over a month ago and have finally gotten around to taking pictures and posting it. It ended up about an inch or two shorter than the pattern because I ran out of yarn, but I'm happy enough with the length. The only thing I did differently from the pattern was that I ended on a row earlier than 7, maybe 4 or 5, so that the edge I finished on looked more similar to the beginning edge.

I really enjoyed this project. It went quickly and the pattern turned out nicely with the cashmere blend yarn. It's extremely soft and warm, and I can't wait to wear it this winter.

Recently tried to pick up knitting again (learned the Garter stitch in my teenager's years) and this was my first attempt in making cables. Like the pattern a lot!

The yarn was Patons Classic in black. The scarf was much softened after an Eucalan wash. I gave this to Dad as a Father's Day gift!!

I just join the Irish Hiking Scarf Knit-Along. I started on cables with a little dishcloth a few months ago. Then, I gave a try last week to twisted cable socks.
But before I knit myself an Irish Hiking Scarf with my treasured Alpaca Andean wool :-) (attempt and frogging last night : too big needles... bummer) I will try the pattern on a little acrylic purse for my DD.

This is my first attempt at an Irish Hiking Scarf and I am really enjoying it. In the bulky yarn it is a really quick knit. I am using Patons Caressa which is a wool blend, but reasonably soft. I am about halfway.

I also really like the colouring. My DD is eyeing this one off but I suspect it will go to her teacher for Christmas :)

I've only just started knitting again after many years away...there's more knitting on my blog :)

This is bigger and it is terminated a little bit different. I used US 6 and I had to cast 132 Stitches. I terminated all the way until there were only two stitches on one needle. Will be startting the Scarf Monday. Woo Hoo! I will start The scarf with the same material Monday. Did I say I will start the scarf Monday! 3rd Time is the One!

I'm using KnitPicks Wool of the Andes (worsted weight) in color Lake Ice Heather for this first one and so far, I like the yarn/pattern combination. This is working up as a birthday gift with matching fingerless gloves in the same color!

I'm currently in a startitis mode and trying to put 'firsts' on my needles (I just finished my first shawl!). This is my first attempt at cables and am really enjoying knitting along on this scarf.

Hopefully I'll be back before too long to post a finished shot...in the meantime, I love seeing all these scarves and what yarn/colors others are using!

Beginning My First IHS

I've been working on my first IHS for about two weeks now. I'm really enjoying working with cables again, and working with a heavy worsted weight it is easy to do one or two pattern reps in a very short amount of time. After doing so much lace knitting lately, a quick satisfying project like this is just what I needed. It measures 20" so far, and I love the way it is turning out with this yarn (Lion Brand Lion Cashmere Blend).

My scarf has become a bit of a slogalong after a really good start. I picked it up a few weeks ago (during the Louis Vuitton yacht races) and did a whole lot. Unfortunately when I looked at it in the morning I had obviously gone into autopilot and the first 2 stitches (out of 4 or so pattern repeats *sigh*) were purls instead of knits. And it annoyed me, normally a small error like that wouldn't but this one did. And because my edge stitches are always wierd and this involved one of those I ripped all the way back rather than just dropping down.

Anyway - after that I didn't pick it up again for a few weeks but yesterday (during America's Cup yacht race - Go Team NZ!) I caught back up to where I was pre-ripping back. With a minimum of three more America's Cup races to go, screening live in the wee hours of the morning here in New Zealand, I hope to get back on track and get the thing finished. I need it - was 0 degress C this morning *brrr!

It is knitted in grey / purple Hummingbird Aires and is gorgeously warm.

This is a great blog and KA. I learned of it and of this beautiful scarf on KH and though I have several things OTN :o\.........what's one more right?!? I believe I will make it for my husband's aunt for Christmas.

This is my second scarf. I put my own twist to it so it is not Authentic but I think it still looks okay.

I did it in 8ply white yarn and 2ply alpaca yarn. It needs to be blocked but here it is anyways.

After 7 months and over 12,000 stitches (37 repeats) I finished my scarf. A family member wanted to know how many stitches went into it for some reason. It's the perfect length for the recipient. THey can wear it to work come winter and not worry about it getting messed up.

My trails and tribulations of the IHS!

I really don't think I am suppose to knit this. Ugh!! I have ripped out it out a couple of times as I didn't like the yarn that I was using. I finally found a yarn that I like and its turning out great. I have 3 inches done.

BUT!!! I have now lost the pattern with the rows that I have completed and do not know which row I am on. I think I know but am not sure. Errrrr!!

I am using Charleston yarn by Stylecraft. It is 67% Acrylic Courtelle, 33% Nylon. The colour is white with flecks of yellow, blue, pink and it so softy and fuzzy. perfect for the scarf. I thought that I would work on it tonight but I guess I'm not.

Hopefully this sheet is around my messy desk somewhere. Maybe in the glove box of the car. Will have to check when hubby gets home.

The scarf is at 35 pattern repeats. It's at a decent length right now, but I'm aiming for 42 repeats. Why did the first 20 repeats take 20 months and the last 15 take 2 weeks?

Several people have mentioned that they hadn't done cables until they used this pattern, and the same is true for me. I found them not only easy but very enjoyable. I made the scarf as a Valentine's Day gift for my husband.

And now that I've been invited to post on Knit Chick's blog, I am drooling over all these fantastic variations...might be time for a trip to the yarn store!

Second Scarf On The Go

Yep I've got my second scarf on the needles right now. I am doing it for the ISE4 swap. I couldnt get a pattern that I could do without problems so I went back to the Irish Hiking Scarf. I've kinda added my own twist to it and have 4 cables over 48sts.
