A Blue Ribbon Entry!

I am thrilled to share my scarf which was entered in the Marias Four County Fair which was last week. I have another one ready to go for my Mother-In-Law for Christmas. This is a great pattern! I"ll have to upload a picture when blogger cooperates.

I'm a bit late sharing pictures ....
When I first introduced myself I said I had about a week to finish the scarf and I did it (by knitting whenever and wherever I possibly could! LOL!)

I just started my third scarf and decided I better join the KAL!!! This one is in Lorna's Laces Shepherd Worsted in the Bittersweet colorway! It is coming out beautifully and I will get a picture next week!!! I just thought I should join in and say hi!!! :)

I'm new here! (better late than never!)

Hello all! I just joined. I've already begun work on my IHS and here's what it's looking like so far. I think for my next one, I want to use yarn that has a bit more weight to it. I do like the feel. Oh, I'm using ry cashsoft dk on 8's I believe. Also in my next attempt, I want the cables to pop a bit more. Everyone's that I've seen so far is lookin' lovely. :)

Stitch 'n Pitch

Went to the Giant's Stitch 'n Pitch. Had a great time. We got a bag that says Stitch 'n Pitch 2006 on it. In our bag we got knitting needles, a black and orange boulch yarn and then a skien of black yarn and a skein of orange yarn. Saw one of the women from my knitting group. Lots of knitters around us.
I'll take a picture of everything and post it whenever.

IHS Update

Ok. Finally... I have pictures uploaded of my finished IHS and the new IHS. Go me. I did things and stuff.



Started: June 1, 2006
Completed: July 5, 2006
Needles: US 11 Clover (mmm I love bamboo needles)
Yarn: Caron One Pound in Juniper
(The color is sort of between the two photos. It was hard to get it to look right.)

I enjoyed knitting this so much, I immediately cast on for another. This time I'm using US 8 (per the pattern), but I took off the garter stitch edge. I really dislike it on the first scarf. I like the way the stockinette edge curl under, I think it gives the scarf a more soft look.

I'm using the left over Bernat denim style sweatshirt in grey from the Wavy Navy throw. I love the yarn and it gets more and more soft with each washing.

Yarn dilema

I had planned to make two IHS, one with Noro Kureyon and the other with Cascade220 but after casting on and knitting two repeats i was unhappy with the result. I like my scarves to have quite a thick, close texture and the result with both these yarns was quite open. I tried again with 4.5mm needles but the result still wasn't to my liking. I don't want to decrease another needle size as this would make the scarf too narrow, so i would need to use twice as much yarn by doubling the width.
I figure i have two options look for a aran (worsted weight yarn) and use 4mm needles but double the stitches and width or use a chunky yarn. I am open to both options but unsure how to estimate yardage of chunky yarn. The first option is easy i will just double the amount as it will twice width.
In my despair of needing to start a new project i have already assigned the cascade and noro to other projects - cascade220 sophie and noro booga bag.
I quite fancy making the IHS in chocolate brown and have seen a blue faced leicester in sienna here which i quite like. I also like the idea of making it out a nice thick soft cotton and am drawn to the blue sky alpaca dyed cotton in espresso. I am going to have to postpone my IHS as i am on stashalong and not buying yarn now until August. I will be back when i have the yarn and am ready to start in ernest.

I finally got to starting My Scarf today... I am doing it in the no cable needle way and I just love how easy it is...
Its a nice Fall looking color, Don't you think ???

I am wondering how long most of you are making your IHS?
Are you doing the recommended 55 inches, or more, or less?

My First IHS

Hi All !
I have just completed my first Irish Hiking Scarf and thought I'd show you all my photo. It was great fun and it also was my first attempt with cables. I used Steadfast Fibers in the colorway Lemon Ice. I will be begin knitting my second one this weekend with Schaefer Yarns-Marjaana 50 merino/50 tussah silk...this yarn is silky smooth and is to-die-for!!!!!

3/4 of the way done...

I am doing my Irish Hiking scarf in Filatura di Crosa 501. I began it back in March and pick it up when I want something easy and comforting to work on...other projects seem to have a way of intervening, such is the life of an a.d.d. knitter! This was my first project using cables, which I now love. This is a great pattern and it's so inspiring to see what everyone has been coming up with--rock on Irish Hiking Scarf Knitters!

i've just joined this kal and trying to find the time to post for two days now. At last i'm here. I plan on making two IHS at the moment, and rather selfishly they are both for me, although i do plan a further one for my best friend after but don't have the yarn for that yet. My first will made using Cascade 220 (shade 8885 a gorge deep purple) which fits in perfect with project sprecturm this month. I am also going to make wristwarmers to match but not sure if i'll use Tua Cha or Fetching.

The second will be made from Noro Kureyon (shade 164 browns and greens).

I am really excited about starting this as i've done a small amount of cabling before but really enjoyed it.
Will post when again with pics when casted on.

It's getting longer - IHS progress

This is my scarf as of this afternoon. I am having a lot of fun knitting this. My husband keeps coming up and staring at it and saying things like "That looks *really* nice." Since it is for him, I'm glad he likes it!

My Irish Hiking Scarf Progress

Started the Irish Hiking Scarf for the KAL today while pet sitting at my daughters. I got off to a good start.

Gedifra Fashion Trend Stripe

I bought this Gedifra yarn in a very small shop in an Alpine Village in Austria. I stay there every summer when I am there teaching. I started the scarf while I was traveling and will finish it here at home. I see that this yarn is not listed on the left as a yarn that has been used by others for this scarf. Am I a FIRST TIME user of this yarn for this scarf??? I think it is very beautiful and I love the colorways as they float across the surface revealing different angles and shades of the cables. This yarn is so soft. It is made in Italy. It is 49 % Acrylic and 51% New Wool. I love it!

New Member - just beginning!

I began the Irish Hiking Scarf with Paton's Pebbles Yarn -



- but the results were disappointing. I frogged it after just 7 rows. The yarn was too soft for the pattern - and really didn't do it (the yarn or the pattern) justice. This pattern needed a stronger - less textured yarn - so the cable and stitches are more pronounced. At least that is my opinion. This is my first experience with doing CABLES! I was so worried I wouldn't "get it" - but I had no problems. I have other plans for the Pebbles yarn - meanwhile - I have decided to go with some Mary Maxim Yarns instead.

Mary Maxim Cloudspun Chunky Yarn



New 100 gm ball! Cloudspun chunky is 100% acrylic chunky weight yarn, mid-way between bulky and worsted weight, and knits up fast. Machine wash and dry. Moth-proof and non-allergenic. Approx. 150 yards (137 m) per 3 1/2 oz. (100 gm) ball. Suggested gauge: 15 sts. and 20 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) on size 10 (6.0 mm) needles. (Canada)

The color I have in my stash is Medium Gray Heather. This will work perfectly for this scarf and for my STASHALONG KAL as well as my Irish Hiking Scarf KAL.

So - I am beginning the scarf tonight (again) - and using yarn from my stash and committing to a month of staying clear of new yarn purchases! I hope to post pictures of my progress in the next couple days.

Experiment - Cables w/o a cable needle.

I decided to try doing this cable without a cable needle - I used to the two needle cable technique that Wendy demonstrates on her site - see the link for directions.

I wasn't very happy with how it worked out -- the failure may be in my technique, since I am not a very experienced knitter, but the two needle technique left an extremely stretched stitch on the far left of the cable - you can see it clearly in the picture, compared to the very neat unstretched stitch in the cable below, which I worked with my cable needle. I think the smaller size of the cable needle is what helps here.

It is a very interesting technique though, and I am glad I learned it -- it will definitely come in handy to know how to do.

New Member Intro - Progress

Hello -- I just started this scarf a few days ago and am enjoying it very much. I am knitting it in lion's brand fishermen's wool, on a pair of short #8's, Clover bamboo ones. It's nice to have a project that fits on the short needles.

This is being knit for my husband, but I like it enough that I think when his is finished I'll make one up for myself - I am particularly pleased with how the garter stitch selvedge is coming out.
